Buying Handbags to Resell: How to Start Without Overordering

Trade Buying · October 2026 · 7 min read
Choosing styles and colours for a first resale order

A first resale order has two ways to fail. Order too much and your cash is locked in a storeroom until the styles clear. Order too little and you have spent money on freight and learned nothing about your market. The craft is sizing the order to what you can actually learn from it.

Start with shapes the market already understands

The temptation with a first order is to look different — the unusual shape, the colour nobody carries. Resist it. The purpose of an opening order is not to stand out; it is to find out what your customers buy, and an established shape gives you a fair test.

Totes, crossbodies and shoulder bags carry steady search demand year after year, which is what a reseller lives on between trends. Novelty can come later, on the strength of what the staples prove. Browsing by category — for example our tote range — is a faster way to shortlist than scanning a full catalogue of 110 styles.

Size the order to the test, not to the discount

Bigger runs are priced better per piece — that is real, and it is explained in how bag pricing works. But chasing the per-piece number on an untested style is how storerooms fill up. The sequence that works:

StepWhat you orderWhat it proves
1. SampleOne unit, in your handsHand, weight, hardware — everything photos hide
2. Opening order1–3 styles, stocked coloursWhich styles your customers actually pick up
3. RepeatsThe winner, in more coloursWhether demand holds beyond a novelty spike
4. Your brandLogo / custom colour on the proven styleWhether the brand adds to what already sells

Stock orders start at 50 pieces, so a first order across two or three styles can stay in the low hundreds — small enough to write off if a style flops, big enough to see a pattern across your customers.

The first order is not a purchase. It is an experiment with a price tag attached.

Why stocked colours beat custom ones at the start

A colour the workshop already cuts is cheaper, faster, and — most importantly for you — repeatable. When a style sells through and you reorder, the colour matches the first batch and your customers see consistency.

A custom colour is a different commitment: it counts as custom work, the minimum rises to 200 pieces per colour, and every reorder of it is a new run. That is a fine place to be once a style has proved itself — it is a bad place to start. The mechanics are unpacked in our guide to minimums.

The first-order checklist

From opening order to a standing range

The shops that grow from a first order share one habit: they treat the winning style as a fixture, not a season. Once a style sells through twice, it graduates — more colours, then your own branding on it, then a second shape that appeals to the same customer. At that point custom work stops being a risk and becomes a plan, because you are putting your brand on demand that already exists.

Everything at step one and two runs through our stock & trade orders page — the current stocked styles, minimums and how a first trade order runs. When a style earns step four, that is when sampling and development start.

Frequently asked

How many pieces should a first resale order be? One to three styles in stocked colours — low hundreds in total. Small enough that a flop is a lesson; big enough to see a pattern.

Which styles sell first for a new reseller? Established shapes with steady demand — totes, crossbodies, shoulder bags. Test on the staples before adding novelty.

Should I put my own brand on the first order? Not necessarily. Test with unbranded stock first; branding or a custom colour starts at 200 pieces per colour and belongs on proven sellers.

Can I mix styles and colours in one order? Yes — the minimum is per colour, so 50 pieces of two colours of one shape is a valid order. Mixing is exactly how a first order should be built.

How do I check quality before a bigger order? Hold a physical sample: edge paint, hardware finish, stitch density, lining, weight. Photos hide the things that generate returns.

How does a repeat order work once something sells? A straight repeat in the same material and colour needs no new sample — the approved unit is the reference — so reorders move fast.
