From Sketch to Sample: How Bag Development Really Works

Between your sketch and a production-ready bag there are four gates. Brands that understand them get better samples, faster.

Step 1 — Pattern making

Your sketch becomes a set of paper patterns: every panel, lining piece and reinforcement. Decisions made here — seam allowance, edge distance, hardware placement — quietly define both the look and the unit cost.

Step 2 — Proto sample

The first physical bag. Expect it to be imperfect; its job is to answer proportion and construction questions, not to be beautiful. Budget one or two revision cycles here.

Step 3 — Revision & confirmation sample

Corrections go back to the pattern, and a confirmation sample is made in the intended materials and hardware. This is the reference unit for mass production — every later bag is judged against it.

Step 4 — Pre-production sign-off

Before the line starts, we confirm materials, colorways, logo branding and packaging against the confirmation sample. From this point, changes are possible but costly — so this is the moment to look closely.

A good factory does not just make your sample. It argues with you — politely — about the details that will hurt in production.

Bring references, a target retail price and honest feedback on each sample round. That combination is the fastest route from sketch to shelf.

How long each step actually takes

Peak season can stretch these. Your contact confirms the exact schedule before anything starts — a far better habit than a promise that quietly slips.

What to send us to start

Product images, your own sketch, or a reference bag — plus the target material and quantity. A photo of the inside, the base and the hardware speeds everything up: it is the details you cannot see in a listing photo that decide the pattern.

Try before you commit

Once the confirmation sample is approved, a small first run is a legitimate strategy. Stock minimums start at 50 pieces, so you can test a style with real customers before committing to a full production run.

Frequently asked

What are the steps from sketch to production? Four gates: pattern making, a proto sample, revision and a confirmation sample in the intended materials, then pre-production sign-off. Every later bag is judged against the confirmation sample.

How long does each step take? A costed quote in 2 to 3 working days, stock dispatch in 5 to 7 days, a custom sample normally in 10 to 15 days, and a bulk schedule confirmed with your order once the sample is approved.

Should I expect the first sample to be perfect? No. The proto's job is to answer proportion and construction questions, not to be beautiful. Budget one or two revision cycles at that stage.

When is it too late to make changes? After pre-production sign-off, when materials, colourways, branding and packaging are confirmed against the confirmation sample. Changes are still possible from that point, but costly.

What should I send to start? Product images, your own sketch, or a reference bag — plus the target material and quantity. A photo of the inside, the base and the hardware speeds everything up.

Can I test a style before a full production run? Yes. Once the confirmation sample is approved, a small first run is a legitimate strategy — stock minimums start at 50 pieces.
